Alliston Hornet Jason Campeau tries to put the puck past Penetang King goalie Chris Daniels, Sunday at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex.

It had to end sometime.

The Alliston Hornets winning streak came to an end Sunday when they dropped their 11th game of the season to the Penetang Kings at the New Tec Recreation Complex.

History was repeating itself. Last season it was game 11 against the same Penetang squad that ended the Hornets 10 game winning streak.

Sunday’s game was tied at three with three minutes left on the clock when a scrap at the Penetang bench resulted in two Hornets players taking roughing and misconduct penalties. The five-on-three play that followed gave Penetang the win when Shawn Moser scored on the power play.

“This doesn’t scare us at all,” said Hornets right winger Jason Campeau. “Although we didn’t want to lose, a loss will make us regroup and focus again. We’ve been trying to go game for game and play the hardest every game, but as we keep winning we’ve kind of slacked off in the work ethic a little bit so a loss will shake us up and make everybody come back to practice on Monday and start a whole new run.”

The Hornets opened the scoring in Sunday’s game and were ahead by two at the end of the first frame.

Campeau scored the opener with an assist from Chad Camirand on a power play with a Kings player in the box on a hooking penalty.

Centre Randy Cox got the second Alliston marker on a fluky goal when the puck popped out of Pentang net minder Chris Daniels’ glove and dropped into the net.

The Kings came back in the second period when Brad Baum put Penetang on the scoreboard.

The game was tied at two when a scramble in front of the net had Hornets' goaltender Troy Dowswell down on the ice, allowing Evan Cole to fire a shot into the open top half of the net.

Camirand picked up his second point of the game in the third period when he wheeled around in front of the net and tipped a backhand shot over Chris Daniels’ glove.

Penetang’s Moser put the Kings back in the game when he found himself alone on a breakaway and rushed down the left side to fire a high shot that went off the crossbar and into the net.

The final minute saw Hornets' head coach Darrin Shannon pull Dowswell from the net and put six attackers in the Penetang end in an attempt to tie it up but the clock ran out before they could make up the difference. The two squads will meet again Friday in Penetanguishene for their fourth match up this season.

“Our focus is to put the puck in the net and get that next win and send a message for the playoffs,” Campeau said.

The Hornets home at the New Tec Rec Complex Sun., Nov. 2 to face the Erin Shamrocks.-

Game time is 6:30 p.m.
