One of many boats in the thick of competition

Team Blue Thunder, whose charity was Candlelighters Simcoe, paddled their way to the top and captured the championship trophy at last weekend’s Barrie Dragon Boat Festival.

The sixth-annual festival saw 56 teams competing for the title and raising funds for a number of local charities.

Other awards were also handed out, including the Spirit Award to Pirates of the Elilepseas from Eplispsy Simcoe County, Best Dressed Team to BNI Crew from BNI and the Bruce Saunders Rookie Team of Year to Yummy Mommies, a group of new mothers.

A Dragon Boat Appreciation Night will be held Oct. 17 to thank all sponsors, volunteers and supporters.

The grand total of funds raised at this year’s event will be released at that time.
