The new additions are Alyson Jayne, Julia Elsie, Alyssa Nicole and Justin Glen.
Angus' Glenda Brocklebank delivered the quadruplets by Caesarian section at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto at 9:15 a.m. Julia and Alyssa weighed in at two pounds, Justin at 1.9 pounds and Alyson weighed 1.8 pounds.
"It's a miracle, I think, to see them so small and doing well," said father Dave.
What makes the babies even more of a miracle is they were conceived without the use of fertility drugs.
A day old, Dave boasts the babies are doing well. To help their lungs develop they are in incubators and attached to ventilators. He said one of the girls already pulled her ventilator tubes out and was breathing on her own, a tiring task given her small size. To help her lungs continue to develop the ventilator cords were re-inserted.
With the quads and parents at the hospital there is still a missing piece to the Brocklebank family. Two-year-old Jayson is at home in Angus with his grandparents. This weekend he'll take a trip to Toronto to meet his new sisters and brother.
Although Glenda gave birth Monday, being a new mom to four babies is still surreal. She said the reality hasn't hit her, especially since she can't hold them yet.
Since finding out they were expecting quads, the Brocklebanks knew Glenda wouldn't carry the babies full term, usually about 38-weeks.
She was hoping to make it at least 28 weeks, but the babies had a different plan. At 26 weeks and one day Glenda went into labour.
"(The doctors) did everything they could to stop it, but it didn't work," said Glenda.
Thankfully she was already at the hospital. Due to the high risk for complication with her pregnancy she was admitted to Mount Sinai.
She is expected to be released Friday, but the babies will remain in the hospital for about two months. Glenda and Dave are trying to get a room at Ronald McDonald House so they can be close to the quadruplets. As it can be hard to get a room there they are also looking for other accommodations, but haven't found anything yet.
Back at home, Angus is pitching in to help the family adjust to life with four new babies at once.
A barbecue is being held Aug. 1 from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Rainbow Mall parking lot in Angus, in front of the Cash Store.
There will be a barbecue, pizza, bake sale, magician, bouncy castle, sidewalk sale, family portraits and more. A silent auction will be held inside the mall at 6:30 p.m. and donations are still being accepted for it. Contact the Cash Store at 705-423-1018 if you have something you'd like to donate.
Donations are also being accepted for the family. Some suggestions are diapers, wipes, clothing for preemie babies and toddlers, toys, formula, and basic necessities of newborn children and toddlers.
