Adjala-Tosorontio fire crews along with the assistance of firefighters from New Tecumseth under mutual aid are currently battling a fully involved barn fire.
The fire was called in at about 12:15 p.m. today (July 17) at 1428 Concession Road 5 of Adjala-Tos near the 5th Sideroad.
The property is home to Simcoe Stables, a horse farm offer boarding, lessons and training. There was an apartment over the barn, where a man and woman lived, but they reportedly made it out. The man, however, was transported to Stevenson Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries along with another person,
The fire started in the apartment according to Sarah Essex who works at the stables. She says she was in the barn working when she heard shouting and noticed the fire.
She says all the horses made it out alive, however two dogs and a cat are currently unaccounted for.
Smoke was visible for miles from the blaze. A large, grey plume could be seen all the way from the Adjala-Tosorontio Municipal offices on the 30th Sideroad at County Road 50.
The barn is completely destroyed. Grass fires are springing up to the north of the remnants and are still causing a problem for firefighters. A separate shed was also destroyed.
Several firefighters have been treated for heat exhaustion as they battle the fire in full bunker gear in 31 C temperatures.
