Deputy Mayor makes another pitch for casino

BY Maija Hoggett   July 09, 2008 17:07

Deputy Mayor Rick Milne is once again trying his luck at getting a casino in New Tecumseth.

Milne made a pitch at a committee of the whole meeting Monday night. With the cost of maintaining roads and building new infrastructure on the rise, Milne said the town has to consider new ways to fund projects.

A few years back, Milne also pressed council to support the Nottawasaga Inn in a bid for a casino licence.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation already operates slots at Casino Rama in Orillia and Georgian Downs in Innisfil, which was the inspiration for Milne's request. He said during a recent visit to Innisfil he saw the upkeep of the sidewalks and roads, which have to some extent been financed by Georgian Downs.

Innisfil gets about $5 million dollars a year in revenue from a percentage of the slots at the harness racing track alongside Hwy. 400.

Because these sites are close by Milne asked town staff to see if New Tecumseth is eligible to house a casino.

He proposed the old arena in Alliston as a potential site.
