A recent study revealed drug use, especially cocaine, has been increasing among young people in the past decade.
The Alliston Legion Branch 171 is tackling this issue by introducing a drug safety and education program to local Grade 5 students.
Each Alliston elementary school will run their own Drug Education Program.
Program co-ordinator Bill Brock said the topic of the legion program changes every year and has been aimed at different grade levels. For example, Grade 3 students were taught tips on home safety a few years ago.
Drug Safety, a 144-page handbook produced by Gateway Community Safety Net, will be given to each student this coming year. This handbook is meant to educate and increase awareness of substance abuse.
The materials provided by local businesses and organizations are helpful to both kids and parents. While children will learn steps to avoid peer pressure, parents will receive advice on steering their kids clear of drugs.
Also included with the program is an educational DVD featuring animated characters, interactive games and quizzes. This DVD is connected to the Community Safety Net website, where kids can enter contests and win prizes.
Important resource contacts and information on drug prevention are found inside the kit.
