South Simcoe Theatre has a number of treats planned for fans of live theatre.
The Cookstown theatre troupe is holding its first four-day play reading event during the community’s Wing Ding Festival. June 5 to 8 plays will be presented that might not otherwise be offered due to subject matter, limited audience appeal or plays that are unpolished.
The first play is June 5 and is Les Belles Soeurs by Michel Tremblay. Directed by Brandon Crone, the play is a comedy set against the background of Quebec’s quiet revolution while a family comes to terms with consumer culture.
June 6 is a reading of Conversations With Teddy by J. Stuart Pearce and directed by Janet Lord-Genyk. The play is a gentle and insightful comedy about a mature couple reflecting on life and love on the day of a friends funeral.
The first public reading of Ontario playwright Teresa Brown’s work Fire Red Blood is being staged June 7. The drama follows a year in the life of a small town Ontario volunteer fire brigade, as seen through the eyes of a rookie.
A Sunday afternoon matinee June 8 features two classic comedies. Starting at 2 p.m. The Marriage Proposal by Anton Chekhov, and Noel Coward’s Fumed Oak are on the playbill.
Except for Sunday, the readings are at 8 p.m. Doors to South Simcoe Theatre, 1 Hamilton St. in Cookstown, open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5. For tickets call the box office at 705-458-4432.
