Jon Short, Ben Holtom and Fraser MacRae have a little fun and make Alex Clark feel like Indiana Jones as they pretend to roll the Banting cairn onto the posing student.
Banting Memorial High School students and staff took to the streets Thursday for its annual Diabetes Walk.

The school raised $16,500 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Every year, the students make the five-kilometre trek from the school to the Banting Homestead, and back.

The event, now in its sixth year, is one of the largest fundraising events in the Simcoe County District School Board.

This year, it was co-ordinated by teacher Claudia Popp with the help of her Grade 12 business class.

The students left at about 10 a.m., and were back by 11 a.m. for lunch provided by Johnny’s Pizza, followed by a performance by local band The Entropy.

Besides funding for diabetes research, the walk also honours Sir Frederick Banting, the school’s namesake, and his contribution to the development of insulin.

Popp recognizes the value of the Diabetes Walk for all who were involved.

“It demonstrates the ongoing generosity and compassion of Banting students, and the community as a whole. The Diabetes Walk is a way for the community to come together and find a cure for this important cause,” she said.
