Members of the Friends of South Simcoe Police – Kuzmich Memorial Hockey Tournament – were on hand at Wednesday night’s council meeting to pass over two cheques totalling $12,000

The memory of a fallen South Simcoe Police Service (SSPS) officer continues to shine brightly.

At Wednesday night’s Council meeting, Sgt. Bob Eeles, along with committee members of the Friends of the SSPS Kuzmich Memorial Hockey Tournament, presented money towards two worthwhile community causes.

Mayor Brian Jackson accepted a cheque for $6,000 to be used towards the restoration of Innisfil Beach Park. Another $6,000 was gratefully received by Joe and Lozanne Wamback, founders of the Victims of Crime Fund.

The tournament is named in honour of Alan Kuzmich, a local police officer who died in the line of duty on August 21, 2002. The 2008 tournament was held in the Lefroy Community Centre from March 27-30.

A total of 18 teams, including players representing the South Simcoe Police, Innisfil Fire and Rescue, Bradford Fire Department, took part in the event.

Eeles also thanked the dozens of local businesses who donated prizes and the numerous community volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the tournament.
