A Midsummer Night’s Dream was last presented eight years ago at Banting. This year it has been prepared and directed by drama teacher Lauren Olsen for Grade 9 and 10 students. This play paved the way for the Shakespeare Festival.
It was one student, Emily Trace, who convinced drama teacher Dale Phelps to prepare and direct Good Night Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet for Grade 11 and 12 students.
Trace performed one scene of the play for her drama monologue. She enjoyed it so much that it seemed a great idea to perform the entire play.
Both of the plays are comedies, each fit for the intended audience.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream has a lot of physical humour, which Phelps thinks will be good for a junior student audience. Good Night Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet, on the other hand, is much more sophisticated. It is a parody that makes fun of common Shakespearean conventions.
Both plays will be shown to a public audience. Good Night Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet will be presented Thurs., May 8 at 7 p.m. in Banting’s studio theatre (Room 207). A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be presented Fri., May 9 at 7 p.m in the cafeteria and courtyard at Banting. Tickets will be available at the door for $6 for adults and $3 for students and seniors.
