It was a miniature version of Dancing with the Stars at Goodfellow Public School on Monday and Tuesday.
The fourth annual Dance-a-thon was held in the school gym to raise money – and school spirit.
Parent volunteer Bonnie McMullen said the school’s 540 boys and girls raised money through donations and pledges to help purchase a variety of equipment for the Alcona school.
On Tuesday afternoon, it was the youngest Goodfellow students who demonstrated their skills in the gymnasium.
Kindergarten teacher Sarah Sportun said the Dance-a-thon was “a wonderful idea. We use a different theme each year. The children can dress up and have fun. The money we raise is used for different things at our school. Last year, we bought a drum kit and guitars for our Music department.”
In fact, parent volunteer coordinator Laurie Goodman said the Dance-a-thon reeled in $5,500 in 2007.
“Next to our Christmas bazaar, it’s the biggest fundraising event at Goodfellow,” Goodman said.
“Our parents are so helpful. It takes about two months to organize. Each year we have a theme. This year, it was Disney movie characters. It’s a big lead up for the kids and we hold sessions about an hour and 15 minutes each over the two days. Dozens of local businesses also support us by donating prizes.”
