Cadets from 329 New Tecumseth Army Cadets are aiming for success at this weekend’s biathlon.

Saturday the Tottenham cadets are competing in the second race of a two-phase biathlon at CFB Borden. The first phase, a cross country skiing race, was held in Orangeville Jan. 19.

Although biathlon is traditionally cross country skiing and marksmanship, with the weather conditions participants will be running instead of skiing this weekend. This is the Tottenham corps’ first time competing in the biathlon that features about 100 cadets from central Ontario.

Local athletes did well in the first stage of the competition. In the senior males event, MWO Brandon Baker was fourth and WO Jeff Tink placed 18th. Senior females MWO Harley Timmons finished seventh and MWO Amanda Nichol was 9th.  In the junior categories, Vanessa Langen finished 5th female and McCormack finished 9th male. As a team the females are in third place and the males are in fourth.

Results from both competitions will be added to figure out the final standings and the top two male and female teams advance to the provincial championships in Sault Ste. Marie. The top eight individual athletes in the senior categories and the top four athletes in the junior categories also qualify for the provincials.
