A local group is hoping to light up the night tonight to celebrate the United Nations World Diabetes Day.

A candlelight vigil is being held at 6 p.m. tonight at the Banting Homestead on Sir Frederick Banting Drive (3rd Line of Essa) one kilometre north of Victoria Street. Head north on the road adjacent to the Alliston Sunoco gas station.

The Alliston Lions Club has lined the outside of the cairn at the homestead with a UN blue string of lights. Over 150 landmarks across the globe are lighting up blue for the event, including the CN Tower in Toronto, the Empire State Building in New York, and the Sears Tower in Chicago.

Event co-ordinators are asking everyone to arrive before 6 p.m., and to bring a candle or flashlight for the vigil.  A selection of guest speakers and activities are planned.

Today (Nov. 14) is also the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting.

The event is being sponsored by the Alliston Lions Club and the Nottawasaga Inn Resort.
