Three Grade 12 Banting students were honoured at the Simcoe County District School Board's annual Excellence in Education Awards Tues., May 4.

Hailey Dermott, Michael Dumont and Jocelyn Dresser joined more than 50 award winners from across Simcoe County during the Education Week event, co-hosted by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation.

The awards are given to students every year for their contributions to their school, academic achievements and citizenship.

Students are nominated by their teachers.

Dermott said she wasn't sure why she was receiving the award, but her impressive list of accomplishments speaks for itself.

She is on the senior girls rugby team and won two medals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) wrestling competition earlier this year. She has been on the honour roll every year for four years at Banting and she has received entrance scholarships for university. She's also been involved with local 4-H programs.

Dresser, a rugby and wrestling teammate of Dermott's said she was surprised about the win. Her involvement with sports, both at Banting and in the community while staying on the honour roll for four years, earned her a nomination for the award.

In addition to rugby and wrestling (for which she has won three medals at OFSAA), she is involved with cross-country, basketball and dragon boat racing. She also coaches the Alliston Union Wrestling Team. Her plans after graduation include using her entrance scholarships while she studies Kinesiology at Brock University.

Dumont managed to balance a part-time job, volunteer at his church -- Alliston's St. John's United -- act as an assistant coach for the Ontario Basketball Association, referee elementary school basketball games and still have enough time to concentrate on academics and make the honour roll for every year he has been at Banting.

"You never expect to win an award," he said.

"I'm honoured to have been chosen and that the teachers thought of me."

Dumont will be attending the University of British Columbia in the fall to study Kinesiology, with plans to go into medicine.

Vice principal Jane Seymour said, "I'm very proud of them, and I've just met them."

Seymour transferred from Stayner's high school in February.

Dermott, Dresser and Dumont accepted their awards at the Board of Education Centre in Midhurst.
