An Angus couple wanting a second child is getting what they wished for, and more. This summer the Brocklebanks are expecting quadruplets.

The odds of Glenda Brocklebank conceiving quadruplets without fertility treatments were one in 729,000. The 27-year-old Angus woman is 25-weeks pregnant with quads, three girls and a boy.

Brocklebank always wanted five children, but her husband Dave said he was only up for two pregnancies. After the birth of their son two years ago the odds weren’t in Glenda’s favour.

“We both got what we wanted,” she said.

They found out she was pregnant on Valentine’s Day and assumed it was a regular pregnancy. About seven weeks in she thought she was having a miscarriage and went to Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie.

“The technologist came back with the doctor and said yes, you are definitely pregnant,” said Brocklebank.

She was happy to hear the news because it meant having the big family she dreamed of. Her husband took a little longer to embrace the reality.

“He was shocked at first but now he’s excited for it,” she said.

Other than her belly growing faster than her first pregnancy, Brocklebank hasn’t noticed a lot of differences. This time around she hasn’t had morning sickness like when she was expecting her first child.

Carrying quadruplets is a high-risk pregnancy, especially since she’s a diabetic.

“I’ve been doing really well,” said Brocklebank. “They’re all healthy, they’re all active.”

To carry the babies full-term would mean an October birthday. Brocklebank said she’s aiming to make it until at least August.

An Orangeville couple had quads in April. Glenda talked to them, as well as a couple in the U.S. with multiples. “They just said take it one day at a time. If people come by and offer to do something, say yes,” she said.
