Tories' arrogance called for action

Political junkies and the media are having an early celebration of Christmas. Santa could not give them such a juicy political bone to savour for the next couple of weeks.

It has been insulting to the general public these many weeks back since the recent election got underway with all political parties in Parliament on the hustings declaring that they did not see the current economic crisis looming on the horizon.

Now that we have our duly elected back in the House there was a reasonable expectation that all they had to do was buckle down and work together to prepare for the anticipated economic tsunami.

Instead the Throne Speech comes and goes then the government have to and go and drop a boot that could be heard all across Canada. Now we are awaiting  Friday to see if the other boot is going to drop.

I have no problem with using the Constitutional provision that offers the opposition an opportunity to form a government that will enjoy the majority support of the House.

Yes, it is quite natural for the current government to attack any perceived weakness in the proposed opposition coalition. However, I do not like the manner in which the governing party refers to the Bloc and its supporters.

As I see it, we live in a free and very proud democracy and we are all entitled to cast our votes for whomever takes our fancy for whatever reason(s). However, Stephen Harper and the rest of his front bench constantly refer to the Bloc as if they are political pariahs within our Parliament. The Bloc Members of Parliament are there at the wish of the Quebec people and the last time I looked at the map, my Canada included Quebec, whether they are Liberals, PQ, Conservatives or Bloc.

I find the arrogance of the present government — where they threw not one, but two firebombs into their recent economic statement — has come back and seriously bitten them and our Parliament through their contempt for the Parliamentary system.

"Will we weather this storm? I suspect that the  Government will take  another constitutional option  available to them in order to duck the bullet by pulling the rug out from under parliament and close the house for an extended Christmas recess before the confidence vote is called which will provide a cooling off period until the House returns to Ottawa Jan. 26."

God help us all that are afloat on this good ship lollipop. Oh and yes, before we forget, the economy.
